Dinner at Dom's for Alex's Lemonade Stand

Dom's Broad Street Eatery hosts Friday night fundraiser.

Dom's Broad Street Eatery has a menu with a misson Friday night, May 20th. The special occasion dinner offering will provide patrons with a 3 course dinner for $18.95 with 20% of the proceeds going to support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, a charitable organization that raises funds to fight childhood cancers.

You may have seen kids selling lemonade with an "Alex" banner above it and wondered what it was all about. It is about a little girl, Alexandra "Alex" Scott, who had cancer and was driven to raise money so that doctors could help other kids like her.

Windsor has a very strong connection to the  story. Alex's mom Liz Flynn Scott and her dad Jay Scott were born and grew up in Windsor and Jay's Dad still lives here as does Jay's sister Kerri and her family.

Alex was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of childhood cancer shortly before her first birthday. Doctors thought she might never walk again, but she was crawling and walking with braces when she was two.

Unfortunately,  by her third year the tumors had started growing again. As part of her treatment she had a stem cell transplant the day after her fourth birthday. That's when she informed her mother, "When I get out of the hospital I want to have a lemonade stand..." and give the money to doctors to allow them to "help other kids, like they helped me." Later that year she held her first lemonade stand fundraiser and raised $2,000 for her cause.

Each year,  Alex continued to hold her annual lemonade stands in her front yard to benefit childhood cancer research. Her story spread around the world and children and adults now have their own "Alex's Lemonade" stands and donate  the proceeds to ALSF.

In August of 2004, Alex passed away at the age of 8, knowing that over $1 million was raised by selling lemonade to help find a cure for childhood cancer.

Dom's Joanne Bizeau said that the restaurant has held other ALSF events and expects this one to be a sellout. She encourages patrons to call for reservations: 860-298-9758.  The special menu available from 5-8 p.m. offers a choice of chicken, pork, clams and steak for adults plus your basic kids' fare for the small fry. It is a BYOB event; lemonade just might be available.
