It is an honor to work with Bill and all of the Carmons and their staff. I will really miss him.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Wanda and her family at this sad time in their lives. Bill was aRead More special person in our lives and made the burial of our "Nana" in New Bedford so much easier for all of us. He went above and beyond when problems arose in New Bedford. His calm manner did what was needed and he and his partner for the drive stayed to solve the problems as we were sent on our way knowing he would take care of the problems. Several years ago, he somehow noticed I was not going to Mary's Place Gala and he called me and wanted my Bill and me to be his guest. I was thrilled. These kinds of thoughtful acts don't happen with all of us . They are ingrained in a person and the kindness and compassion and "outside"the box thoughtfulness was ingrained in Bill. Thank you for those acts, to not just us ,but all of those that have stories of Bill. His thoughtfulness and that of Carmon Family is beyond all the descriptive positive words in the dictionary.Bill is finally at peace and we will support his family in any way we can as they face each "new beginning "without him. Our thoughts and prayers to his wonderful Mom Nan and to his brothers , sister, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and all his family. Your physical presence is gone but your spirit and memoires will live forever Bill. God Bless Ann and Bill Walsh

I don't think it's possible to sum up what Bill and the Carmon family mean to the town of Windsor.Read More Kindness. Class. Compassion. Sense of Community. Diplomacy. Humor. Honarable. These virtues have been passed along to their children who are carrying the torch in a most respectful way. What a legacy. Bill will be missed tremendously. May the goodness they have shown to thousands of families be returned tenfold to the whole Carmon family and embrace them through their loss.

I am so thankful for our veterans. Thank you for informing the public of these despicable scams!

Sage Park en masse is to be congratulated. The Principal Mr. Cavaliere is to be commended for theRead More leadership he has provided. Money can buy good leadership, however it is much better when it is 'home grown'. The Principal sets the tone of the organization to accomplish those expectations. Mr. Cavaliere worked with his staff and parents and students to complete the application interview process. It sounded from the presentations that is was a long process and kudos to all stakeholders at Sage Park. ................................................. New Paragraph ................................................. If we could move the VeePs with the kids to the high school the results might continue upward. It is management and leadership that leads the way. Mr. Cavaliere it would seem is such a manager/leader. Can we clone him?

Good article!

A common sense approach and dedication. I would also add in parent involvement to the list above.Read More Ms. Richardson -there is your answer. No need for the costly study. Again-congrats to Sage Park, the students, teachers, administrators and parents.

Of course they back the license bill! More of a guarantee for the democrats to stay in power whenRead More they continue to back the social programs that take away money from the struggling taxpayers and give it to those who are on the system! This is another opportunity to get the illegal votes! So please tell us how they are to pay for a license, insurance, cars, gas, etc. when it is illegal for them to work????

Yes, please identify your group' leader(s) at the very least. It is unnerving for some toRead More "communicate" with anonymous individuals especially when regarding such sensitive matters. Thank you.

@ Concerned Mothers and Fathers, thank you for your posting AND letter sent to my home with noRead More return address or contact information. How is it possible to speak with your group? Per your posting, you are communicating with someone from the BOE and its not me. This board member spoke about making sure that the public is aware of the proposed cuts before citizens go back to the polls at the last meeting; it was stating in the spirit of inclusion. In this environment of transparency, it's only fair I have an opportunity to speak with you as well. Per the title of your group, this could be inclusive of EVERY parent in town rather than a particular point of view. Please advise; thank you in advance.

@Agent86, There is $83,750 in the "Town Support for Education" section of the Town budgetRead More for the Windsor Private Schools. I am unsure what that covers. In the BoE budget Transportation for "Non public" is $245,000 or ~3/10ths of 1%. ................................................. NEW PARAGRAPH ................................................. The best idea I heard was using a single bus(K-2, 3-5) on a route versus 2 buses (K-2 & 3-5) and staggering the start times by some 10 minutes. The 3-5 schools would run 10 minutes later, and we could possibly save a meaningful amount of money. Kids for conversation in the 3-5 schools would be on the bus some 10 minutes longer in the morning, and the K-2 some 10 minutes longer at the end of the day. Note: Maps.google.com says based upon info input the time is 10 minutes or less Parents with multiple kids would see both kids picked up in the AM and dropped off in the PM at the same time. Now the real question is what would the savings be. A review of the budgets over the past 3 years are unable to answer the question.

I also heard a comment from 1 board member regarding busing for private school childrenRead More ("religous school" was mentioned). Unclear why they were targetted (in the comment) but would remind BoE that the local private schools serve the community, some boast very high national test scores, and those parents (many of which receive financial aid) also "subsidize" public school students. (I use the term generally since their children do not attend public schools but they still pay taxes.)
Agent 86 May 24, 2013 at 03:28 pm
I heard some comments about Pay-for-Play Sports during the last BoE meeting. Let's find out whatRead More those costs would be for families? If they cannot afford them, maybe they can submit some sort of financial aide form (as proof) and then the school can adjust the fees accordingly? Just an idea. I know many private schools ask this of families requesting financial assistance. I am not sure of the possible savings but it could be examined.

I remember when the Ken Starr report came out regarding Bill Clinton, how many people printed it andRead More downloaded it. This coming August or September, just think how many people in Windsor will read Marlon James' report (as written by his students). Every word of it will be examined by hundreds of pairs of eyes. It will not be beach reading, but it will be late summer reading. If I remember, or someone else can put out the reminder, I will remind people to read (reread) the MJLU contract in early August, so we all remember the basis of the James Report. But one cautionary comment, if the report is helpful, we will need to admit it.

Mr. Williams indicated he had seen multiple statistics about student costs. The numbers I haveRead More shown have charts or other information that you can use to understand ?how I did the calculations. My numbers indicate the method of calculation and the lower ~$21K number is based upon all costs including the Town Aid for Education as you can see divided by the number of students. ………………………………………………………………………………… NEW PARAGRAPH ………………………………………………………………………………… The higher number (~$24K) is the same as the above with an adjustment of removing “magnet school tuition” as reported (~1MM) and lowering the number of students by the number that are reported as going to magnet schools (~500) as disclosed. ………………………………………………………………………………… NEW PARAGRAPH ………………………………………………………………………………… The charts are easier to understand. I have data going back to 1993, yet I show 2000 to present. This is the easiest. It is the Schools Approved budgets prior to the current (2013-14) proposed budget discussion, divided by the number of students reported in the budget report year over year. Take the current proposed budget ($63,394,900), divide by the students and you get $19,334/student and because we have fewer students it is still a rise of some 5% in per pupil expenditures over 2012-13. ………………………………………………………………………………… NEW PARAGRAPH ………………………………………………………………………………… This is a simple method Mr. Williams and I hope this answers your questions.

Each year, this one is no different, the scare tactics come out to push for more money vs looking atRead More a budget responsibly. We first hear if we don't get what we want we will cut teachers and academics. No consideration for cutting the Dr James study and no discussion as to how this contract may indeed be illegal. Sage Park obviously has their act together -learn from them not college students from Chicago who have no stake nor experience. Admit the Dr James study is at least a mistake (at minimum)and cancel the contract. There have been comments alluding to missing out on Shad Derby and the food served there if there is a responsible budget -this is ridiculous. With elections coming up it is ridiculous to go on and on about volunteerism and blessings. This is NOT about anyone not respecting volunteerism or nice people. Let's keep the focus where it should be. It is about financial responsibility from the Town side and the BoE. It is about making good decisions with taxpayer money and improving both the school system, educating our kids and the Town. It is NOT about who loves the town more or if you disagree with elected officials you do not love the town and do not want to see it succeed. Let's keep the focus here and discuss and fix the issues. Let's do so while working within a budget. Remember, for the town to succeed, the taxpayers must have some money left over to spend in the town. People are hurting financially. Many have lost jobs, do not have the luxury of getting guaranteed raises and/or live on fixed incomes. There are younger people struggling to make ends meet as well. Council speaks as if $90k is not a big deal. In bad financial times or for that matter any time, to take $90k of taxpayer money to pay for a horse shoe pit that 15 members wanted for their league is not fiscal responsibility to all tax payers. Paying town employees for 4 months to "work" on resurfacing less than 1 mile of road only to call in Glasso to re-grade it properly, pave, stripe and put in curbs in only 2 days is not fiscal responsibility. There is waste to be cut on both sides that would not affect the good food at Shad Derby folks. Let's stay focused.

I have read this with interest because it appears the misinformation surrounding this Grant has runRead More rampant. Many including myself walked away from the Board of Education/Town Council budget review with a clear belief that this was a matching grant requiring the Town to expend an odd amount to receive the Alliance Grant. This confusion seems to have been propagated by the Administration. The fault lay squarely at the feet of the parties involved in the presentation. For what purpose did they want to spread this misinformation? It just proves the point we need to make a change in November.
Albert Williams May 22, 2013 at 12:59 pm
Oh can we just get to the Nov elections already!! So many eyes have been opened, i just can'tRead More wait!!

To clarify -"won at our expense" I mean the expense of all tax payers. Dollar Tree wantedRead More the property due to location -they would have and could have easily bought it. They had big guns Ernst & Young negotiating with wannabes and made fools of them
