Whether Hillary chooses to run, or even wins, will do NOTHING to change the mess we are in today.Read More The problem with this country has gone well beyond its elected officials. It truly lies with those that elect them. Those being AMERICANS. Our country has become a nation of LAZY ALPHAS...too one dimensional to admit that perhaps they may not know everything and too lazy to make the effort to actually think for themselves. It is a societal plague. We talk on how we are the greatest nation on Earth, well wake up because we are NOT. Look at Canada, the country Americans mock...They are actually doing better than us and am pretty sure it won't be long until Mexico is up there with them. It's a joke, we are a joke...All talk and no substance. I should not be too critical because there are good people out there, however, they are being overshadowed by intellectually retarded politicos.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions.
Observor April 23, 2014 at 11:03 am
One of the primary reasons blacks lag in admission to elite colleges without affirmative action isRead More that a disproportionate number of them come out of horror show urban school systems where they are trapped by an unholy alliance of the teacher unions and the Democrat party. The DTC keeps the unions working regardless of incompetence and in return the unions bankroll the DTC with their members' dues money. Affirmative action is just a way to paper over that "inconvenient truth."
Kent Frederick April 23, 2014 at 11:44 am
Let me say something as a graduate of the University of Michigan, who had the tougher road toRead More admission as a non-resident. The problem with affirmative action is how to quantify it. Michigan can have its pick of students from the elite private and public schools in and around Detroit, Chicago, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. Schools in Detroit certainly don't offer the educational opportunities that a school like Detroit Country day, or public high schools elite suburbs like Winnetka, Illinois or Bethesda, Maryland do. But, is a kid from a very rural area in the U.P. any more prepared for U of M than a kid from Detroit? By the same token, a kid from a farm outside of Muskegon represents the same kind of diversity to a kid from Westchester County, New York as someone from Detroit.
Kent Frederick April 23, 2014 at 11:59 am
Observor, It may have been Walt Williams who said that the problem with affirmative action is thatRead More it can set up a kid to fail. Schools that serve large groups of minorities often do not prepare a kid for an elite school, whehter it's a private school like Harvard or Duke, or an elite public school like Michigan or Cal-Berkeley. He suggested that a student, regardless of race or color, should always select a school that is suited to his qualifications. Someone from an inner-city school in California would be better off going to a university in the California State University system, rather than a school in the University of California system. The idea is that he can succeed in college and move on to a successful career. If a person ill-prepared for Berkeley or UCLA attends either of those schools, he has a greater likelihood of flunking out and giving up on higher education. My father attended a 1-room school house until the 6th grade. He then attended a rural junior high and high school. He wound up going to a land-grant university 11 years after graduating from high school, courtesy of the GI Bill. Because of his going to a school that, while good in the field of agriculture, was an average university overall, he was able to move into management eventually transferred to Chicago. So, I attended a very good suburban high school that prepared me for the University of Michigan. If he had gone to a school for which he wasn't prepared, he could very well have dropped out, which would have meant no management opportunity or transfer to Chicago. I know a lot of very successful people who went to small, liberal arts colleges or public universities that aren't of the same caliber as Michigan, UCLA, or the University of Illinois. Yes, going to a school like Michigan, Harvard, Duke, Northwestern, or Stanford can lead to great opportunities. But, going to a non-elite college or university doesn't close the doors on those opportunities.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.

At the most basic level all educational standards are the learning goals for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level in order to move on the next level.
Jennifer April 23, 2014 at 12:58 pm
I read every single link on the Common Core website, and there is virtually NO information on it. ItRead More says that the Common core was developed by the State Governpor... not federally funded. You can search all you want ont the CC website, and you will never find the list of people that Steven Lee gave you above. It does not disclose how the development of these sandards was funded, and by whom. It SAYS educators were involved. So you believe that, and it is enough for you. I does NOT disclose how federal funds ARE being used to prod states into accepting the CC standards. It is a PR website, and nothing more. If I am skeptical about something, I try to find unaffiliated sources of information. And I read editorials pro and con. And I read the skeptics, and fact-check. I immediatly rule out any post mentioning "illuminati", aliens, eugenics, or that seems blatantly racist or otherwise extreme. But I also have to say that although I allow that you have a different point of view, I can't say that you have provided me with any reasonable "facts" that I can follow up on. So you are welcome to your opinion, but I don't find it a helpful or persuasive one.

There are problems with all types of bags in common use--plastic, paper, and cloth. Why not makeRead More and use plastic bags that are biodegradable when exposed to sunlight over a certain period of time? It seems like this would be the way to go for most "grocery store" uses, unless these bags are way too expensive. I prefer a market-based solution that "encourages" people to make environmentally-friendly choices, So perhaps there should be charges for bags in the stores, with the least environmentally-friendly choices costing the most.

Agranon - I'm a moron because I am tired of everybody and his mother trying to put themselves inRead More every story? Then so be it - I'm a moron. To be honest, I am also really tired of all the people that were compelled to run the Boston Marathon because "I had to finish for all those who couldn't." Get over yourself. It was a tragedy. Those responsible should be ripped apart by dogs. I sincerely hope the families of those affected can move on somehow. But how does Mary Jane Smith running the marathon help ANYBODY but herself? She's not doing it for "those who can't". She's doing it to maybe get on TV and she's probably feeling a little sanctimonious because she ran 26.2 miles and you didn't. Here's more... FromRead More http://www.climate.gov/news-features/climate-qa/why-did-earth%E2%80%99s-surface-temperature-stop-rising-past-decade Why did Earth’s surface temperature stop rising in the past decade? The most likely explanation for the lack of significant warming at the Earth’s surface in the past decade or so is that natural climate cycles—a series of La Niña events and a negative phase of the lesser-known Pacific Decadal Oscillation—caused shifts in ocean circulation patterns that moved some excess heat into the deep ocean. Hmmmm... So much for your theory that the Earth has been warming for the last 140 years! You also say "It has had the most precipitous rate of warming in the past 40 years". No, sorry, not true again. You can't just make stuff up and expect that everyone will believe you.

The ICLEI site listed above is nothing more than ICLEI propaganda central. Among its goals:Read More combatting "climate change" based on the fraud of global warming. Beware whenever you read or hear the words "carbon footprint," or "climate protection." These are just U.N. sponsored buzzwords and efforts to intrude into matters of local control, property rights, and freedom. ironically, as globally-average temperatures have flatlined for the past 17 years, the U.N. has gotten more shrill in its predictions of "catastrophic global warming." Why? Because they're losing the debate and are afraid they won't have the rationale for global income redistribuition. At the heart of the global warming fraud is the notion that the mild (one-third of a degree Celsius) and brief (1978-1997) temperature rise we experienced was caused by carbon dioxide. This has never been more than a half-baked theory. In actuality, climate is controlled overwhelmingly by the sun and the earth's positionalrelationship to it playing out over geologic time, not short-term political cycles. Scientists are now coming to the realization that sun-induced cosmic rays and their effect on cloud cover may have a far greater impact on climatic variability. The primary reason CO2 was implicated, and supported by the environmental extremists, is that it can be used as an instrument of control. If it's the sun, we simply have to learn how to adapt. What's amazing is the amount of hyperbole that has been generated, and donations solicited by environmental groups on the basis of this fraudulent theory. We escaped a bullet a few years ago when the Senate refused to go along with Obama's "cap and trade" legislation, but not before CT's entire Congressional dlegation voted for the nonsense. Obama's own Treasury Dept. estimated the annual cost of "cap and trade" at $1,742 per family. Other studies projected the cost at $3,000, rising to $4,000 annually per family by 2032. And this all because of a one-third of a degree rise in globally averaged tempartures that had already stopped for 12 years by the time the House voted. Even now, Senators Murphy and Blumenthal are pushing the carbon dioxide fraud. Just further proof that liberalism is a mental disorder. Recently, Green guru and geophysicist James Lovelock, author of the Gaia hypothesis, and considered one of the pioneering scientists of the 20th century, officially turned his back on man-made global warming claims and the green movement’s focus on renewable energy. "Global warming" or "climate change"(the new term adopted because there has been no warming for 17 years) are the new religion, just as Lovelock says. Both the scientific community and the general public have awakened to the scam, the phenomenon of which speaks more to the human capacity for self-delusion than rational thought.

@Kendall - you're certainly entitled to your opinion, though the politicizing of science isRead More inherently dangerous. You make several statements that are misleading at best, and I suspect that politicization of the issue has clouded your rational thought as well. I don't expect you to agree with me - or thousands of scientists - because your mind is set on believing that the vast majority of the scientific community is of a liberal leaning, money grabbing bent. You know that "conservative" scientists also work on the issue and agree with the climate change/warming consensus? Anyway, for anyone still reading, take time to inform yourself and try to remove ALL politics from your understanding of science. National Geographic does a great job in its online coverage of the issue, including this: http://energyblog.nationalgeographic.com/2010/12/21/climate-change-myth/ (In partnership with Shell Oil, lest anyone claim it's a liberal anti-business agenda).
