Local Group Finds Home for Heroes Monument

Residents have completed a successful effort in finding a home for their planned living memorial to troops who perished serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Since the twin towers fell on Sept. 11, 2001, dozens of Connecticut's uniformed men and women have lost their lives while serving in the War on Terror in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

A local group, including two Windsor women, have now established a memorial to those Connecticut troops that will last a lifetime — a living memorial.

Led by Bloomfield resident Sue Martucci, Windsor-based Connecticut Trees of Honor Memorial (CTHM) have approached town after town with available open space to host their living memorial inspired by Fort Stewart's (GA) Warriors' Walk

The memorial, according to a statement released by Middletown officials, the memorial will feature a tree dedicated to each fallen Connecticut service member.

The memorial will also feature walkways, flower gardens, benches, flagpoles, statues and lighting, and will be a “serene, reflective area where families, friends and visitors can be reminded of the valiant courage, bravery and selfless sacrifice of our Connecticut men and women who gave their lives in military service to our country,” according to the CTHM website.

The first fundraiser for the memorial will be held at Dom's Broad Street Eatery on Fri., June 22. The $18.99 three-course meal will be served between 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. Children can eat for $4.99. See the attached document to view the entire menu.
