Windsor Groups Collaborate on Healthy, Affordable Dinner Options

Windsor organizations collaborate to provide an evening of education about healthy and affordable family meals.

The Windsor Early Childhood Council, in conjunction with the Windsor Health Department and Social Services have carefully crafted a family-oriented event to help residents learn more about creating healthy meals for your family on a budget. The event will show families how to eat healthy without breaking the bank.

Who needs skills like this?  "Everyone," said organizer Suzy Rynaski, event coordinator.

"[The Early Childhood Council] determined that one of the problems we have in Windsor is childhood obesity," she said  "Alot of kids are not meeting level on their Physical Education skills tests."

Another one of Rynaski's concerns is the ever-increasing number of children attending Windsor schools with food allergies.

And then, of course, the difficult economy's effect on being able to choose and prepare healthy, well-balanced meals for your children on a regular basis.

"Dinner on a Dime will encompass all of these," said Rynaski.

The evening will offer parents the opportunity to eat dinner with their families and then learn about the benefits of raw food, hear from a professional nutritionist, discuss meal preparation for people with allergies and talk with other professionals on a variety of topics.

"Come and eat as a family and then hear quality information," said Rynaski.

But ECC hopes that the benefits will not end there.

"Our goal is that we will be able to take back measurable results," added Rynaski.  The group plans to poll attendees at the event and then follow up with them again in three months time. "We want to see if it still impacted them three months down the line," said Rynaski.

Finally, this event will draw together everyone who cares about Windsor's kids and their health.  "Our hope is to use the talent and gifts of the community to accomplish more for our children while supporting everyone in the process," said Health Machado, a contributor to the event.

The event will be held Jan. 17, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at L.P. Wilson.  There are still seats available. Obtain tickets by calling Suzy Rynaski at 860-463-4309.
