Bare Shelves Plague Windsor's Food Pantry

Keeping up with the demand for food has been difficult for Social Services

The summer months are the toughest for the Windsor Food Pantry. As Windsor families are as busy as ever — chasing after the kids, planning vacations, or just struggling to find time to relax. The warm weather, for better or worse, is somewhat of a distraction.

Unfortunately, for about 400 Windsor families the distraction that summer provides draws attention away from the food pantry, so much so that there are empty shelves.

"It is not the time of year that people tend to think of the food pantry being in need," said Social Services Coordinator Kristen Formanek. "Unfortunately, hunger does not stop."

With over 200 households utilizing the food pantry each month, compounded by a drop in donations, the food pantry is struggling to meet the demand.

"We need all of our shelves to be filled with nutritious foods like
pasta, sauce, canned vegetables and fruit, canned meats and cereal, macaroni and cheese and soup. We also are in desperate need of bags, paper and plastic," Formanek added.

According to Social Services, there are a few ways individuals and groups can help. Groups can host a food drive in their business, place of worship, camp or neighborhood.

Those interested in helping out should contact Social Services by calling 860-285-1839. Donations can also be made in person by visiting the food pantry located in the L.P. Wilson Community Center.
