An Informed Youth Is A Powerful Tool

Everyone is given the lecture before entering college that you have to be independent in order to succeed. In addition to this, it is also important to be informed about what is happening around you. While undergoing my first semester, the 2012 Presidential Election was occurring. What shocked me was how closely students were paying attention to the candidates. Because college is filled with students at the age of 18 and above, they all have the ability to vote. However, due to my birthday on November 16th, I was not able to vote in the election. Despite the frustration, I continued to observe and learn about the candidates.

Unfortunately, in an environment where the majority of people are not of age to actually vote in matters such as elections, the issues do not come off as relevant. I am writing to encourage the Windsor’s youth to actively observe and understand what is happening throughout the community. Right now, the town budget is being discussed and revised because it has been rejected by the public three times. The fact is, every single resident is effected by this budget. Interning at WIN-TV has allowed me to hear the thoughts of many people throughout town. It is important for the youth of Windsor to understand the ways in which they are effected so they can form and support their own opinions. The more informed you are, the more likely you are to act on your thoughts and beliefs. If everyone can see this, the youth can become a powerful force.

In the end, I encourage everyone no matter what age to pay attention to what is happening within the community. The influence of the youth has the potential to make change and provide a new perspective.
