The first day of summer descended upon Windsor with a vengeance Wednesday. Although the hot season does not official begin until 7:09 p.m. today, the sun and humidity did not wait for the clock.

The National Weather Service issued a heat index warning until 7 p.m. and then again for Thursday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Cooling centers were opened throughout the region and people started heading to area shopping centers to walk around in the air-conditioned comfort.

In New Britain, a dozen people were hospitalized after being overcome by the heat during that high school's graduation, according to the Hartford Courant.

In Windsor at high noon, the three-man team from Utilicon worked at digging a ditch to install a new underground cable stretching from alongside Broad Street to a nearby business along the green.

The men, Mark Scata of East Hartford, David Fritz of Woodstock and Sean Villandry of Manchester, kept a bottle of Gatorade close by and occasionally stuck their heads under the sprinkler being used to water the lawn at Bill Selig Jewelers.
