St. Gabriel Students Share Their Culture!

In October, the middle school students at St. Gabriel School in Windsor hosted a multicultural event for fellow students, families and friends.   In order to promote cultural awareness and understanding, the students in the 6th-8th grades chose a country that represents their nationality.  After a couple months of researching their heritage, the students produced a research project related to something important in their culture.

During Culture Night, students share what they have learned with numerous cultural exhibits, varied ethnic food offerings and artistic performances.  Guests are provided a passport, designed by the middle school students, which they then have stamped after visiting each country’s table.  Offerings this year included lasagna from Italy, banana fritters from St. Lucia, scones from England, shamrock shakes and corned beef from Ireland, Jamaican beef patties and so much more.  The students also decorated their table with items from their country, including pottery, jewelry, posters and crafts.  This year several students from the 7th grade performed a Russian ballet, Danz Macabre.

In its 5th year, Culture Night attracts about 200 people and has become a tradition at St. Gabriel School!  The success of the evening is attributed to organizer Rosalia Ruberto, St. Gabriel School’s Spanish and Art teacher, along with the efforts of the students and their supporting parents!   The students love this event, and they are learning invaluable lessons.
