St. Gabriel School’s 2014 Annual Science Fair

St. Gabriel School held their annual Science Fair awards ceremony on January 29th.  This year 119 students participated, creating 81 projects.  While Middle School students are required to complete a project, participation for the elementary level is optional.  Despite having the choice to not participate, 40% of the student population from grades 1-5 worked alone or with a partner and submitted 38 projects.  Kindergarten students work on one project as a class.

There was a great variety of topics this year; from classics such as generating electricity, growing mold, and testing what makes a liquid freeze fastest; to some new and fun ideas including the study of smell and memory in rats, the effect of different liquids on Gummy Bears and the impact of emotion used in commercials (very fitting just before Superbowl Sunday!)   Science teacher, Meg Rosa, always encourages students to find new ideas and try something different from projects done in past years.  Once again, this was a successful year.  Students took basic ideas and explored them in new ways and expanded on classic experiments to find something different to study and display.

Judges come from various places throughout the area including education or science related fields.  Awards were given by grade for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, as well as honorable mention for most grades.  Family and friends gathered at the school on Wednesday, January 29th, to view all projects and share in the presentation of awards.

The top four winners from grades 7 & 8 have the opportunity to participate in the Connecticut Science and Engineering Fair held at Quinnipiac College March 11th - 15th.  Students compete against other students in their grade level and the topic area of their projects.  St. Gabriel students eligible to participate are Max Mossberg (Gr. 8; 1st Place – “Bio vs. Fossil Fuels”), Justin Lam (Gr. 8; 2nd place – “Electromagnets”), Adanya Jeudy (Gr. 7; 2nd place – “How Color Effects Heat”), and Emil Shwayhat (Gr. 7; 3rd place – “Acceleration Explanation”)

Congratulations to all who participated and good luck to those who will continue on in March!
