St. Gabriel School Students Winners at CT State Science & Engineering Fair

St. Gabriel School held their school Science Fair in January of this year.  Four students from grades 7 & 8 were then eligible to participate in the Connecticut Science and Engineering Fair held at Quinnipiac College March 11th - 15th.   The St. Gabriel students that participated this year were Max Mossberg (Gr. 8; “Bio vs. Fossil Fuels”), Justin Lam (Gr. 8; “Electromagnets”), Adanya Jeudy (Gr. 7; “How Color Affects Heat”), and Emil Shwayhat (Gr. 7; “Acceleration Explanation”).  .

The Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair (CSEF) is a yearly, statewide fair open to all 7th - 12th grade students in Connecticut schools and several New York towns.  One objective of this program is to attract young people to careers in science and engineering while developing skills essential to critical thinking. Through science fair participation, students are encouraged to pursue independent work using proper research methods.  Winners from 120 schools and regional fairs are then eligible to compete at the CSEF.  These students compete for the 500 available spaces at the state fair.

All four of the St. Gabriel students who participated submitted their projects in the Physical Science category and all four took home honors this year! Emile Shwayhat (Gr. 7) and Adanya Jeudy (Gr. 7) received Third Honors in their grade categories and Justin Lam (Gr. 8) received Second Honors in his grade category. Max Mossberg (Gr. 8) received First Honors in his grade category. In addition, Max was awarded as a finalist and returned to stand with his project on Thursday, March 13th to discuss his research with some of the judges.  He was honored with three special awards. They are the Dominion Nuclear Connecticut Physical Sciences Award for which he received a CSF Medallion and Acrylic Award; the EnergizeCT/eesmarts Alternative/Renewable Energy Awards for which he received a Medallion and Acrylic Award; and an award from the Office of Naval Research-U.S. Navy/U.S. Marine Corp for which he received a certificate and $50 gift card to Amazon.
