Windsor High School Girls Basketball Gears Up for Season Opener at Platt

Coach Vinnie Cianfarani leads his squad into a season, hoping to build on last year's10-10 record.

Windsor girls basketball is set to open their season against Platt on Wed., Dec. 8. Building on a 10-10 record from last year, coach Vinnie Cianfarani will count on defensive intensity and spacing for offensive production to breed success for his team, which he describes as "Not big in numbers, but big in heart and desire."

With declining numbers in a basketball program that has only 25 girls signed up, Cianfarani doesn't have a particularly deep squad, and early-season injuries have not helped his cause.

Despite the obstacles, Cianfarani has faith in this year's group, which returns three starters.

"I like our chances," he said. "The girls are working hard and I think they are ready to put on uniforms. They're getting tired of playing each other."

The Warriors will see action against a team in different color uniforms for the first time Wednesday night. Cianfarani is looking to a number of his girls to step up. In fact, according to Cianfarani, everyone will have to step up for this team to gain success this year.

The three returning players—senior guard Natasia Franklin, 5-foot-11 senior Sydnee Over in the post, and junior guard Amanda Lopez will provide the foundation for a team that doesn't lack much experience, only numbers.

The Warriors also have a slew of juniors who will contribute regularly—Lopez, Adriana Aguilar, A'Lexus Williams, Ashley Santos, Keniece Walker, and Grace Sansone.

Sophomore Molly Curry is also expected to contribute on a regular basis. "She'll provide a spark off the bench," said Cianfarani of his young guard who saw time on the junior varsity and varsity levels last winter.

Amber Flagg, who is recovering from an injury, will help out a great deal when she returns, as she is one of Cianfarani most athletic players.

Beyond injuries and numbers, the Warriors' success will be determined by their ability to develop team chemistry in the coming weeks. "We'll be a much better team after Christmas," Cianfarani said. "They only give you 12 days to get ready for your first game, including Thanksgiving. [The Season] comes fast and furious."

With or without a great deal of preparation time, Cianfrani's squad is up for the challenge. "Wednesday at Platt, we'll be ready to perform at a high level," he said.
