Windsor 11-12 All-Star Softball One Game Away From District Title

The Windsor 11-12 All-Star softball team defeated Ellington 5-2 Friday evening to force a deciding rematch for the District 8 title in Windsor on Saturday.

It was a game the Windsor 11-12 year-old All-Star softball team needed to win to have a shot at the District 8 championship, and it did just that in a 5-2 victory over Ellington on Friday.

The win forces a rematch on Saturday afternoon for the district title as Windsor was coming out of the loser's bracket in the tournament.

Ellington scored one run on a Brianna DeLand RBI double in the top of the first and threatened to pile on more with no outs and two runners on base, but winning pitcher Madeira Alexander worked her way out of the jam and the Windsor offense sprung to life.

Catcher Madison Lee drove in Alexander with a double to left in the bottom of the first, then knocked in two more runs on a bloop single to right en route to a three-run second inning.

Alexander had retired the Ellington batters in order in the top of the inning.

Alexander allowed just four hits in the complete game victory and was outstanding defensively, making several key plays including the game-ending assist in a play at the plate.

Lee went 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBI, and shortstop Jordan Tyburski also drove in a run in the win.

The Ellington offense threatened to close the gap in the top of the third inning, but a couple of base running mistakes allowed Windsor to get out of the inning unharmed, and Alexander silenced the Ellington bats for the next two innings.

Down 5-1, Ellington’s Cassie Holmes and Rachel Stone reached safely to open the top of the sixth, and Hunter Ryan knocked an infield single to load the bases with one out.

Alexander got Courtney Fitzsimmons to fly out, but then hit leadoff batter Kayla Buffington to send a run across the plate. She then fielded a Jessica Miller ground ball and sent the throw home for the force out to end the game.

Miller was the losing pitcher for Ellington while DeLand played well behind the plate.

Ellington and Windsor will now face off again on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Windsor to decide the 2011 District 8 champion.
