Warriors to Host Xavier in Second-Round Tournament Play

Boys basketball will host Xavier (Middletown) tonight at 7 p.m.

Windsor boys basketball is coming off of two victories against previously-undefeated teams, and is set to host 14-7 Xavier (Middletown) Wednesday night in the second round of state tournament play.

The Warriors will have the benefit of fresh legs as they earned the top seed in the tournament and a first-round bye. 17-seed Xavier beat Manchester, 72-63, on Tuesday, a team Windsor beat twice in the regular season, including a five-point victory in January.

Windsor is averaging 75 points per game in post season play, while allowing an average of 58. Their defensive play has been the foundation of this season's success, their only loss coming against Glasonbury on Dec. 18, and will likely continue to be the determining factor in their performance.

After their last win, the CCC championship game against Northwest Catholic, Windsor coach Ken Smith said “Defense has been our forte for a long time. If we don’t play defense, we don’t have a chance.”

Xavier's 72 points against Manchester trumped Windsor's tally against the same Manchester squad in two matchups this year.

If Windsor wins, they would face the winner of a 8-seed Crosby and 9-seed Fairfield Prep contest at home.

Tip off will be at 7 p.m., at Windsor High School.
