Windsor, New Canaan Vie for Spot in State Title Game

Windsor (11-0) will play New Canaan (10-1) in East Haven Saturday at 2 p.m.

Windsor faced its toughest opponent Tuesday when Notre Dame unsuccessfuly came to town to tried to knockoff the top-seeded Warriors, but Windsor will likely be faced with its toughest competition to date once again Saturday when it takes on New Canaan in CIAC semifinal play.

Windsor and New Canaan have the No. 5 and 6 offenses in the state, respectively, but it may be Windsor's defense, which has carried the squad in tough times, that will determine the game's outcome.

New Canaan (10-1) enters the contest with offensive balance like no other offense the Warriors have faced.

The Rams are averaging 242 passing yards and 178 rushing yards per game.

New Canaan's offense is driven by its quarterback, senior Matt Milano.

Milano's touchdown-to-interception ratio of 31-to-4 shows he makes little mistakes. He also leads the team in rushing touchdowns (7), and is fourth in rushing yards (255).

Beyond Milano, The Rams' offense is a complete cast of quality role players.

The team's three leading receivers are all within 200 yards of one another.

The team also has six players who have gained more than 200 rushing yards on the year, but not a single player who has cracked 500.

The Rams' bruising back, Kevin McDonough, leads the team with 428 yards on the ground.

Stopping Milano will give Windsor its best shot at a spot in the state championship at Rentschler Field.

While New Canaan is a seasoned veteran in title games, losing to Masuk last year in the championship, Windsor is playing for its second visit.

Windsor lost to Ridgefield, 14-13, in 2002.

The winner of Saturday afternoon's game will play the winner of Masuk and Daniel Hand at Rentshler Field on Dec. 9 or 10 for the CIAC Class L Championship.

Kickoff is at 2 p.m. Saturday in East Haven.

Masuk and Daniel Hand play at 7 p.m.
