WHS Named One of America's Best High Schools

See where Windsor High sits as Newsweek's "The Daily Beast" includes the school on its list of the nation's 2,000 best schools.

Windsor's school district hasn't seen a ton of good news over the past couple of years. In late 2010, the district was labeled as "failing," per federal No Child Left Behind Legislation. Soon after, the district would be ranked as the No. 26 lowest-performing district in the state.

There are glimmers of hope, however. The latest ray of sunshine comes on the national stage — Newsweek's The Daily Beast recently released its list of the top 2,000 public high schools in the nation. Windsor High made the list.

According to The Daily Beast, the success of a school was measured by their effectiveness in turning out college-ready graduates. That effectiveness, the website said is based on six components: graduation rate, college-acceptance rate, Advanced Placement tests taken per student, average SAT/ACT scores, average AP test scores, and the percentage of students enrolled in AP courses.

Windsor High is ranked No. 1,598 on the list.

The list includes a number of schools in the area, including:

No. 112 - Connecticut IB Acadmy (East Hartford)
No. 405 - Farmington High School
No. 455 - Glastonbury High School
No. 629 - Hall High School (West Hartford)
No. 720 - Conard High School (West Hartford)
No. 741 - South Windsor High School
No. 1,069 - Bloomfield High School
No. 1,238 - Sport and Medical Sciences Academy (Hartford)
No. 1,530 - Newington High School

The No. 1 school on the list is Bowling Green, Kentucky's Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky.
