Warriors to Host Notre Dame in First Round

Windsor will look to shut down the Green Knights' powerful rushing attack.

Following an historic regular season, Windsor football is looking to build on its success as the post-season will kick off under the lights at Jack O'Brien Stadium Tuesday night when No. 8 Notre Dame - West Haven rolls into town.

Offensively, Windsor, which is coming off a stellar performance over Waterbury two weeks ago, is looking to minimize mistakes — something that has plagued the Warriors (10-0, 5-0) since the season began.

Yes, the Warriors have a high-powered, fast-paced offense that averages 264 passing yards, 161 rushing yards and just shy of 40 points per game, but it has been set back at times by fumbles and penalties.

The one constant throughout the season (other than junior quarterback Quinn Fleeting throwing for more than 250 yards in all but one game) has been defensive play.

As the saying goes, defense wins championships, and it is defense that has led Windsor to its position atop the CCC Division II, and a No. 1 spot in the playoffs.

Tuesday, Windsor will see a rushing attack like none they've seen through 10 games.

Notre Dame doesn't try to hide their approach to offense, throwing no more than six times in any individual game this season.

It relies heavily on a three-headed monster of a rushing attack that is twelfth best in the state, and is responsible for 2,717 yards, led by senior Javon Grey.

Grey has scored 15 touchdowns gained 1,039 yards on the ground to date, a modest average of 103.9 yards per game.

Grey comes into the contest having gained more than 100 yards in five consecutive games, including a 204-yard performance in a 27-6 win over Wilbur Cross (New Haven).

But it is his yards per carry average, 8.45, that is most impressive.

Grey is supported by senior Amihr Bess, who is averaging 4.82 yards per carry, and sophomore Cameron Tucker.

Tucker is averaging 9 yards per carry.

Thus far, Windsor, which has allowed fewer than 90 yards per game, has managed to contain powerful rushing attacks, as seen in wins over Middletown and RHAM.

The winner of Tuesday's game will play the winner of No. 4 New London and No. 5 New Canaan on Dec. 3.
