School Board Reschedules Meeting to Address Alleged Violations

A special meeting of the Windsor board of education, canceled for November 27, has been rescheduled for December 6.

According to meeting documents, the board is scheduled to discuss and possibly take action on allegation of a violation of board policy with respect to the controversial hiring of Loyola University-Chicago professor Dr. Marlon James.

James was hired by the board of education in September to conduct a three-year project aimed at analyzing inequities and potential for excellence students experience while attending Windsor High School.

It was insinuated that the results of James' project would aid district administrators, teachers and board members close the achievement gap — that is the gap of performance between white students and students of color, specifically black males.

In a memorandum drafted by the board's legal representation, Hartford's Shipman & Goodwin, it was revealed that board members Paul Panos and Cristina Santos alleged Board President Doreen Richardson and Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Villar violated board policy when they led an effort to hire the Dr. James.

The board's meeting to address the allegations is scheduled to be held at 5:30 p.m. in room 17 of L.P. Wilson Community Center.

The meeting will include time allotted for residents, students and their parents to address board members. That allottment of time will be honored at the beginning of the meeting.

The board is also scheduled to discuss the process of review for Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Villar, who began what will be his first full academic year in Windsor in September.
