Meet WHS' 2013 Class Scholars

Windsor High School's class of 2013 officially became graduates Monday night when they walked across The Bushnell stage in Hartford.

Leading the class is a group of three scholars who have achieved academically, athletically and socially on their way to earning the title of valedictorian, salutatorian and class scholar.

The valedictorian of the class is UConn-bound Elizabeth Lauri.

As the number one student in the class, Lauri is an exceptional student. She earned induction into the National Honor Society her junior and senior years, is a member of the Spanish Honor Society.

Lauri is also the captain of Windsor High's Math Team and Academic Team and has received numerous academic award throughout her career.

Some of those awards include the Harvard University Book Award, the Connecticut Governor's Scholar Award, which recognizes the top 30 juniors in the state) and a scholarship from Johns Hopkin Center for Talented Youth.

Lauri used the scholarship to take a course on cultural anthropology at the University of Saint Joseph (West Hartford).

In her spare time, Lauri plays viola (she's done so in a school orchestra since third grade) and competes in the Connecticut High School State Fencing Association.

Joining Lauri is joined by Nicholas Chapman, the class salutatorian. He is also headed to Storrs.

Chapman is a student who not only shows academic prowess, but civic responsibility as well.

He's a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society and Windsor High's Academic Team. During the 2011-12 school year, Chapman led his community problem solving program team in reducing styrofoam use in the high school's cafeteria. He's also an Eagle Scout and an active member of Poquonock's St. Joseph Church.

Chapman's Eagle Scout project consisted of planning and raising funds for a gravestone cleanup at Veteran's Cemetary, during which over 200 volunteers turned out to clean the 1,200 gravestones. Excess funds were raised, so he donated the rest to WIN-TV's Send Hometown Windsor the the Troops program.

During his academic career, Chapman has received the Yale University Book Award, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Award the Rochester Institute of Technology Computation Medal Award and the Daughters of the American Revolution Excellence in Community Service Award.

Jeremy Jacobellis rounds out the group of 2013 scholars, having been named class scholar. He'll be attending the Air Force Academy in the fall.

Jacobellis is a member of the National Honor Society, the French Honor Society, captain of the boys' swimming and diving team and a member of the boy's tennis team.

He's also president of the French National Honor Society and president of the French Club.

During his career at Windsor High, Jacobellis collected a number of awards, including the Alliance Fracaise Book Award, the title of CAPT Scholar (he achieved the highest score possible in all areas of the Connecticut Academic Performance Test), the Brown University Book Award, the World Class Warrior Award and the title of Advanced Placement Scholar (he achieved a 5 on the AP Language and Composition Test and AP Statistics Test).

All three scholars will lead their class Monday night at graduation, which will be held at The Bushnell.
