Girls Soccer Picks Up First Win of Season

The Warriors beat East Hartford, 1-0.

It was a night of firsts Tuesday under the lights at Jack O'brien Stadium. After starting the season 0-4, the Lady Warriors of Windsor picked up their first "W" of the year, beating East Hartford, 1-0.

The lone goal scored was a special one -- having been shutout in each of its four previous contests, the goal was Windsor's first of the season. Scored in the fourteenth minute of play, it was also the first goal of freshman forward Amanda Santos' career.

The Warriors' overall success in the game was the result of what Windsor coach Allison Murphy described as "an all-around effort from the girls."

"It was the first game we've actually all been healthy... They played well, they played as a team, they communicated better than they have all season, and upfield we had a lot of pressure, which was nice. I thought they worked well together," she said.

The girls' cohesiveness was no better displayed than on the game's lone goal, as senior Krystina Jackson moved the ball forward to the freshman Santos, who chipped the ball over the right shoulder of East Hartford's charging keeper, Cassi Quattropani.

Ball possession was pretty much dominated by Windsor (1-4), particularly in the second half, during which East Hartford (1-4) only managed three shots on goal.

Senior captain Ashley Santos anchored the Warriors' performance in goal, stopping the ball six times.

While the 1-0 score depicts a closely fought match up, which it was, it fails to tell how many chances Windsor had to extend its lead.

Jackson hit the crossbar on two free kicks, and countless through passes were a touch away from sailing into the back of the goal.

Windsor will play under the lights at home again on Thursday when Manchester (2-3) comes to town.
