Girls Relay 4th, Langs 5th at New England Track Championships

Windsor track pulls out of Nationals next weekend with exception of Over in 400

Windsor track and field athletes displayed their ability with some strong finishes Saturday at the New England Championships in Burlington, VT. For most of the Warriors, though, it was the end of the season after a decision last week to pull all but one of the qualifying athletes from the Nationals next weekend in Greensboro, N.C.

“We decided last week, for a variety of reasons, that we wouldn’t be going to the Nationals,” said Windsor girls coach Ron Wilson. He did not further specify reasons but did not dispute that travel and lodging costs were factors in the decisions of some athletes.

Sophomore Sydnee Over, who did not compete on Saturday, will be at the Nationals, in the 400 meter dash, in which she has the fourth fastest time in the country. All three relays, which qualified, as they did in 2010, will not be running over the weekend.

The Lady Warriors were able to impress at the New England Championships, even without three of their top athletes – Over, senior Brianna Allen and junior Keniece Walker.

Their 4x100-meter relay placed fourth and the 4x400 relay was 11th, despite entering with the fastest seed time. The absence of Over impacted the 4x400 relay, as did not having Allen, a strong sprinter who runs in both relays as well. Not having Walker led to the withdrawal of the No. 1-seeded 4x800 relay. The 4x800 relay won the State Open and Class L and had qualified for the Nationals over the past couple of weeks. The Warriors were defending champions in the 4x800 relay at the New England Championships on Saturday.

Windsor’s other relays did well. The 4x100 team of Chalsea Clark, Janae Wilson, Courtney Kearse and Jocelyn Harris, which was seeded fourth, finished fourth in 49.86 seconds. They placed first in Class L and were runners-up at the State Open. The 4x400 relay, which set a meet record in winning the State Open and finished first in Class L, was 11th in 4:00.32. Medinah Nabadduka, Kearse, Nastasya Rodriques and Ashley Graves were the runners.

Clark placed tenth in the 100 meters with a time of 12.65 seconds. She was fifth in Class L and sixth at the State Open. Graves, a senior, finished 12th in the 400 in 58.66 seconds. She was runner-up to Over in Class L and sixth at the State Open. Janae Wilson, a junior still recovering from a quadriceps injury June 2 in the Class L meet, was 17th in the long jump at 16-2¾.

“I was very happy with the performances,” said Wilson, who coached the boys as well, with the absence of boys coach Joe Bienasz. “Under the conditions, it was raining cats and dogs, I was happy with what they did.”

Among the boys, the top placer was senior Zachary Langs, who was fifth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.81 seconds. He won the event in the Class L championships and was third in the State Open.

Junior Daniel Jamieson finished sixth in the 200 meters in 22.60. He was third at the State Open and fifth in Class L. Senior Greg Andrade placed seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 44-2¼ inches. He was fifth in the State Open, after being runner-up in Class L.

Senior Tosin Edwards was 21st in the shot put at 46-4½. He was fourth in Class L and sixth at the State Open.

The 4x100 relay (Jamieson, Tyquan Johnson, Alexander Smith and Sherrod Peay) placed 10th in 44.31. The relay finished second in both Class L and the State Open. Johnson replaced Langs in the relay after Langs sustained an injury in the hurdles, Ron Wilson said.
