Explore Food Systems & Sustainability at Loomis Chaffee

As part of the Reunion Weekend at The Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, two activities centered on food sustainability will be offered to the general public:

  • “Composting 101” will be offered on Friday, June 10, from 3-4 p.m. This hands-on session will teach simple methods of composting and provide useful skills to use at home. The event will be held at the composting area behind the Clark Center for Science & Mathematics.

On Saturday, June 11 from 1:30-2:30 p.m., a panel of guest speakers will discuss food systems through the lens of access and availability of fresh, local produce. Additionally they will explore its effects on individuals and communities on a social, economic and environmental level. On the panel will be Loomis Chaffee alumnus Tom Gilbert, the nationally recognized executive director of the Highfields Center for Composting and the Center for an Agricultural Economy in Vermont. The Highfields Center was the central feature in Ben Hewitt’s book, The Town that Food Saved; acknowledged in Bill McKibben’s book Eaarth; and more recently featured in a presentation by Dan Rather on a story about Hardwick, Vermont. Joining Mr. Gilbert will be Rita Decker-Parry of the Hartford Farmers Market and Martha Paige of the Hartford Food Systems.

The panel program will be held in Gilchrist Auditorium, in the Clark Center for Science & Mathematics.

Space for both events is limited and an RSVP is required. For reservations or more information, contact Jeuley Ortengren at 860-687-6097 or via email at jeuley_ortengren@loomis.org.
