Board of Education Expected to Approve Budget Tonight

The board of education is expected to approve Superintendent Elizabeth Feser's budget proposal tonight at the board of education meeting.

At the top of the list of agenda items for tonight's board of education meeting is Superintendent Elizabeth Feser's budget proposal for fiscal year 2011-12. The board is expected to vote and approve the proposed budget.

Dr. Feser's proposed budget reflects a 2.31-percent increase in requested funds. The budget requests a total of approximately $62 million, the bulk of which will go towards salaries and benefits (77-percent) and instructional and non-instructional supplies (9-percent).

Vice President of the Board of Education Christopher McAuliffe addressed the town council last week, notifying the board of a board of education finance committee meeting in which committee members came to agreement on the proposed budget before them.

"We finished going through the budget and we did vote on the budget as a finance committee and it passed. We'll be taking it to the full board for recommendation and, hopefully, approval," McAuliffe said.

Increases in the proposed budget are directly tied to the redeployment of positions created in recent years. To make up for some of the spending associated with those positions, the role of some positions, such as vice principals will be reduced.

As described in the proposal, Windsor High School and Roger Wolcott Early Childhood Center will each receive an increase in funding, having been awarded an increase of 2.46- and 3.22-percent respectively.

Sage Park Middle School will see a .42-percent decrease in funding.

The four elementary schools (Poquonock, John F. Kennedy, Oliver Ellsworth and Clover Street) will see a 2.37 decrease in funds. The largest cuts will be seen in science funding (-$3,145) and library funding (-$1,866).

If approved, the budget would then be sent to the Town Council for review.
