Town Council to Vote on $.5 Million Landfill Project

The project includes improving the site's gas collection and odor minimization.

The Town Council will meet Monday night and vote on the appropriation of funds for a landfill improvement project that will cost just over $500,000, according to town documents.

The project, town documents say, involves the improvement of the landfill's ability to collect gas and minimize odors.

While the project's total cost is $.5 million, the council will vote Monday to appropriate $260,000 from the Landfill Enterprise Fund -- money budgeted in anticipation of necessary improvements to the facility shared by Windsor and Bloomfield.

In accordance with recommendations made by the town's landfill gas consultant, SCS Engineers, the council will vote on the installation of structures intended to "enhance [gas] collection and further mitigate odors form the site," town documents say.

The landfill currently contains piping meant to collect gas and mitigate odors; however, town documents say, sections of the piping have been "covered or surrounded by additional waste material," compromising the system's efficiency.

The appropriation of $260,000 from the Landfill Enterprise Fund will be voted on along with the recommendation that the project's bidding requirements be waived.

Since the landfill's most recent expansion in 2004, the town has added 400 feet of additional pipes to increase the facility's efficiency. Much of the piping that exists must be replaced, according to the Town.

The Town Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. in Town Hall Council Chambers on Mon., Oct. 3.
