Shelter Numbers Drop as Restorations Increase

272 residents stayed overnight on Wednesday

While Windsor's emergency storm shelter at L.P. Wilson reached its cot capacity overnight on Tuesday, the number of residents seeking warmth at night has decreased.

According to shelter staff, 272 residents spent the night at the shelter Wednesday — a drop from the more than 300 residents who stayed overnight Tuesday. That night, sleep space was expanded from the community center's gymnasium into the former Youth Services Bureau space and the Board of Education meeting room in the building's northern wing.

The shelter was packed, however, during dinner on Wednesday, serving 350 meals, and
268 meals were served during breakfast on Thursday.

For the first time since Saturday, drivers were stopped at intersections thanks to working traffic lights in several parts of town.

As of Thursday morning 41 of the town's roads have had power completely or partially restored, thanks mostly to the number of line and tree crews at work, which surpassed estimates given earlier in the week.

Town Manager Peter Souza reported Monday night during an emergency meeting of town council members that the town would be provided two line crews and one tree crew to work alongside Windsor's Department of Public Works workers.

Wednesday, however, Souza reported that 20 line crews and 10 tree crews were on the ground making repairs and clearing fallen tree limbs.

Thanks to their efforts, some major sections of town, including Windsor Avenue and Town Hall offices, gained power Wednesday night, and are open for business Thursday.
As of noon on Thursday, CL&P has maintained that it will continue to work to restore 99 percent of outages in Windsor by midnight on Sun., Nov. 6.
