Mechanic Street Development Comes Before Town Council

The developer's agreement will go before the Town Council for approval tonight.

The development of Windsor Center has been mentioned by town officials as being integral to the town's future. The renovation of the train station and the freight house, which now houses the Windsor Art Center, were both part of the enhancement of Windsor Center, and the development of Mechanic Street is not different.

On Monday night, developers will likely move closer to breaking ground on the development of 55-69 Mechanic Street when town council members vote on a motion to approve sale and agreement terms.

According to town documents, the development "will complement the successful First Town Square condominiums and capitalize upon the planned expansion of the commuter rail service."

As outlined in the agreement, the sale of 55-69 Mechanic Street, a total of 6.5 acres of land, will be purchased for $900,000. In addition, the property is "for a residential development containing 130 one- and two-bedroom units with off-street parking.

The nearly $1 million the town makes on the deal will be used for "the remediation of existing environmental conditions on the site and relocation costs associated with the displacement of the Parks Garage, the Windsor Horseshoe Club "and potentially the dog pound," town documents say.

The town council will vote to approve the agreement during a regular council meeting Monday night at 7 p.m. in Town Hall Council Chambers.
