Man Sentenced for Using Fake Money at 5 Connecticut Stores

Officials said the man used counterfeit cash at several stores, including one in Windsor.

A New York man has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in federal prison for using counterfeit money at five Connecticut stores, including a store in Windsor, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Shaun Whitehead, 26, of Brooklyn, NY, was found guilty of five counts of passing counterfeit obligations, according to a news release issued by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Whitehead reportedly used counterfeit $100 bills to purchase iPads and Bose headsets from stores in Windsor, Lisbon, Naugatuck, South Windsor and Waterford, according to 2011 trial evidence.

In addition to 42 months of imprisonment, a judge sentenced Whitehead to five years of supervised release following jail time.

Whitehead has been detained since March 9, 2011, and in federal custody since Aug. 24, 2012, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

The Windsor Police Department assisted in the case.
