Malloy Announces Tornado Aid, Tours Windsor Damage

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy stopped at Windsor's O.J. Thrall tobacco farm Tuesday afternoon as a part of his tour of tornado damage in Windsor, Windsor Locks and East Windsor.

The damage, Malloy said, amounted to roughly 10 percent of the Thrall crop, which is used for high-grad cigar wrappers around the world.

According to Malloy, Thrall's damage extended beyond plants and the shade tobacco netting that was strewn throughout the region to irrigation systems.

A dollar amount of damage has yet to be determined, the governor said, but aid will be provided.

Malloy announced Tuesday that assistance for agriculture damage caused by Monday's EF-1 twister will be provided through a $5 million reserve set aside for farms that suffered damage from 2013's February snow fall.

"Agriculture is a big part of who we are as Yankees. I'm doing everything I can to support it," the governor said.

Malloy also visited a Windsor Locks neighborhood and East Windsor's Sports World, which had its dome ripped off by the tornado.
