Town Council May Borrow $685K for New Fire Truck

The Fire department is looking to replace a 1984 truck at Hayden Station Fire House.

The Windsor Town Council will discuss the possibility of borrowing $685,000 to purchase a new fire truck for the Hayden Station fire house Monday night.

The new truck, according to town documents, is a pumper rescue vehicle, and it will replace a 1984 Grunman Pumper.

THe National Fire Protection Association suggests that vehicles older than 25 years should be taken out of service.

Hayden Station, according to Fire Administrator Paul Goldberg, responds to 75 percent of emergency calls in town because of its location off of Interstate 91. Amounting to about 750 responses each year, the fire house is in need of "a dependable, well-equipped and modern piece of apparatus," Goldberg wrote in meeting documents.

The new vehicle carries a $590,000 price tag, but replacement equipment and bond issuance costs will raise the amount to nearly $700,000, town documents say.

Town Manager Peter Souza reported that Windsor's AAA bond rating was upheld by Standard & Poor's in November.

Monday night, the Town Council will discuss financing the new truck and vote to set a public hearing on January 3, 2012.

The Council hear the results of the town's 2011 Citizen Survey and vote on amendments to town employees' retirement and contribution plans.

The Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. in Town Hall Council Chambers.
