Canty Quits and Runs Away

Shocking a room full of fellow Democrats, Windsor Democratic Town Committee Chair Leo Canty called it quits Thursday night.

Plenty of people talk about what others should do politically, and he's usually who ends up having to do the work, Canty told fellow Democrats immediately following the meeting's adjournment.

"Well that's over. I resign," he concluded, making a quick exit for the door.

Multiple attempts were made to get a comment from Canty following his resignation.

Canty, however, began jogging, then running, from reporters. He then sped away in his pickup truck without a word.

Anita Mips, town committee secretary, said she did not see Canty's resignation coming.

According to Mips, Vice Chair Florence Barlow, who was not in attendance Thursday, will assume Canty's seat.

Democrat and town councilman Bill Herzfeld expressed surprise as well, adding that Canty is "obviously upset."

Herzfeld said Canty's quick exit was "out of character."

Herzfeld did say, however, that Canty is correct in saying a small number of people end up doing the work many would like to see completed.
