Dr. Edwin A. Njoku, operates a Poquonock Avenue office, has been charged with sexual assault.

According to East Hartford Police, Edwin A. Njoku, M.D. has been charged with multiple counts of sexual assault following a victim's complaint that the physician "forcefully had sexual intercourse with her against her will."

The alleged assault, according to police, occurred in an examination room of Njoku's East Hartford office.

East Hartford Police responded to Hartford Hospital for, what they called, "a late reported complaint" made by an adult female patient of Njoku's.

The alleged victim, police said, reported that Njoku forced sexual intercourse against her will while in an examination room. The complaint came in addition to "an earlier, less serious, sexual assault incident with Dr. Njoku on an earlier occasion," police said.

Njoku, police added, contacted the patient upon learning about the complaint to get her to deny her statements to police.

Njoku has been charged with first-degree sexual assault, two counts of fourth-degree sexual assault, bribery of a witness and unlawful restraint in the first degree.

His bond was set at $825,000. The 52-year-old is set to appear in court on February 1 and February 22.

According to police, their investigation has led them to believe that "other patients under the care of Dr. Njoku have likely been victimized in a similar fashion."

LePore said the Windsor Police Department has not fielded any complaints against Njoku from his Windsor office.

East Hartford Police are urging anyone with information regarding Dr. Njoku to contact the police department where the incident took place or contact Sgt. Jim Leonard of the East Hartford Police Department by calling 860-291-7590.
