Officers, Firefighters Honored for Heroic Action in March Fire

Windsor emergency units saved a mother and daughter from their burning home on March 20.

On the morning of March 20, Windsor emergency units arrived on the scene of house fire on Grande Avenue. When the arrived, smoke billowed out of the home's front windows, and filled up much of the house, leaving a mother and daughter cornered in a room over the garage.

The mother, awoken by smoke alarms, was on the phone with Windsor dispatcher Donna Bolasevich, who kept the mother on the phone until emergency units arrived on the scene.

Fire Chief Bill Lewis said Monday night that there was an estimate of 20 mintues before fire units could reach the Wilson home, but those who arrived on the scene first took matters in their own hands.

Officers who arrived on the scene grabbed a five-foot step ladder from the garage, climbed on top of it, and guided the mother and her young daughter out of a second-story window and to safety.

Officers, firefighters and Dispatcher Bolasevich were honored at Town Hall Monday evening. Each were given plaques during the Town Council's meeting.
