The artist was in the building at the time of the fire, Windsor Assistant Fire Chief Steve Bianchi said. The man sustained unspecified injuries and was transported to Hartford Hospital, Bianchi added.

Two firefighters also required medical attention due to heat exhaustion.

Bianchi said the fire started within the small art studio, which is sandwiched between A Perfect Shine and the Raw Food Central Building.

Owner of and , who identified the artist as Dan Bunk, was at the site when the fire started.

Bunk's condition is currently unknown.

"I saw smoke coming from the garage... and it just got thicker and thicker," Griffing said.

Griffing's son, Windsor Griffing, 13, was in the Raw Food Central Building as smoke billowed out of the neighboring establishment.

"I was at my desk doing homework, and it got very dark outside of the window," the younger Griffing said. "At first, I thought that it was just a cloud."

After having fought the blaze for approximately two hours, the cause of the fire was still unclear, Bianchi said.

The possible presence of flammable art supplies may have contributed to the fire's growth and caused several explosions, which were confirmed by Bianchi and heard by the Griffings and John Jary, who was at his home on Stinson Place.

"I heard a big pop," Jary said, explaining that small bits of debris were sent down Broad Street, which was closed Wednesday due to the fire.

Windsor fire departments, in addition to fire units from Bloomfield and South Windsor, were on the scene to aid in the effort.

Five people were inside the building when the fire started, Griffing said.

A Perfect Shine owner Ronn McMilleon and employees evacuated the building without harm.

Bunk sustained the only reported injuries.

The fire was contained within the art studio, said Bianchi, but did cause some damage to A Perfect Shine.

Raw Food Central did not sustain damage from the fire itself, but was exposed to smoke.

The fire, and its cause, remains under investigation.
