Driver's Injuries Fatal in I-91 Overpass Crash

46-year-old Richard Mazella has died, according to Hartford Hospital representatives. Mazella's car fell 25 feet from a Bloomfield Avenue highway overpass Wednesday morning.

Editor's note: A Richard Mazzella, 70, also owns property in Clinton (John Street and West Main Street) and should not be confused with the R. Mazzella, 46, in this story.

Richard Mazzella, the driver of the Jeep that fell 25 feet off of Windsor's Bloomfield Avenue highway overpass, has died, a Hartford Hospital spokeswoman said Wednesday morning.

The 46-year-old man, who owns property in Clinton, was transported to the hospital by Windsor Volunteer Ambulance Tuesday morning after his SUV plowed through the concrete wall of a highway overpass and crashed, overturned and on fire.

According to Windsor Police Capt. Tom LePore, the crash is currently under investigation, and the local department is working with a regional accident-reconstruction team to figure out what happened before Mazzella's Jeep left the overpass. LePore said officials are able to tell that Mazzella exited I-91 from the northbound HOV lane, but his vehicle did not stop as it approached the Bloomfield Avenue intersection.

Mazella was the sole occupant of the single-car crash.

Police are seeking the help of anyone with information regarding what happend before Mazzella's vehicle left the highway and hit the wall. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Windsor Police Department by calling 860-688-5273.
