Blazing Heat...Weeds a Growin'

Welcome to the mind of a gardener.  These are the thoughts I think:

I love being outdoors in the summer and I love being in my garden, but when temps rise above 90 and the humidity level is 80, I just cannot bear to be out in the blazing sun. For 10-14 days in the month of July, gardeners were forced too look at their garden plots withering away under the brutal heat from air-conditioned homes.

And then, the heat finally broke.  And I rain outside and spent two hours ... enjoying my harvest?  Sitting in the cilantro?  Smelling the tomatoes?  No.  Weeding.

Weeding, weeding and weeding.

You see, what rain we did get during that time frame made my plants grow, but it also made the weeds grow.

That is a sad and unfortunate fact about gardens. As the plants grow, the weeds grow.

Weeds don't know they are unwanted. They think they are growing right alongside their buddies the squash, the pumpkin and the cucumber.

It took about 3 days, but I finally got the weeds at bay.  Unfortunately, and I wonder if you have seen this too, they took their toll on my veggies. What nutrients should have been going into my squash, went into my weeds: clover, smartweed and I think I have a horrible infestation of wormwood too.

Never fear gardeners.  August is predicted to be cooler!  You know what that means?  You have at least one more month of growing time AND nice weather to boot, so you can be out in your garden. And if you weeds sort of took over, don't give up.  Weed a small 2x2 patch at a time.  Little by little you can regain your garden back.

Gardening is like life, sometimes you spend more time pulling the weeds than enjoying the harvest.
