Jews Cast Away Sins by Tossing Bread Into River

JEWS “CAST AWAY” SINS BY TOSSING BREAD INTO RIVER ON 1st DAY OF ROSH HASHANA – JEWISH NEW YEAR 5772 

THURSDAY/TODAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2011Rain or Shine at approximately 1 p.m. (following morning services) on the Farmington River behind Bart’s Drive-In, located at 55 Palisado Ave. (Rt. 159) in Windsor – ¼ mile North of Windsor Center.

On the first day of Rosh Hashana Year 5771, members of Congregation Beth Ahm synagogue will toss bread into the Farmington River in a symbolic "casting away” of sins by the edge of a body of moving water. This ritual called Tashlich (TAHSH-lick) will take place at approximately 1:30 p.m., following Congregation Beth Ahm’s morning of services at the Windsor synagogue a mile away. Participants come from throughout Greater Hartford.

Led by Rabbi Alan Lefkowitz, Congregation Beth Ahm is a 60-year-old Modern Conservative synagogue that welcomes individuals and families from throughout Greater Hartford, including interfaith families. The congregation was created by 16 families in 1951 and initially was known as The Jewish Community of Greater Windsor. In September 1960, it opened its doors in a newly built synagogue on 362 Palisado Avenue. The religious school’s small classroom learning begins at age 4 and continues through adulthood.
