Hartford Business Leaders to be Inducted into Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame

Four of Connecticut’s notable leaders will be inducted into the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at the 34th annual Induction Ceremony and Dinner, to be held at the Hartford Marriott. The annual event recognizes business and community leaders who have made significant contributions to the prosperity and quality of life in the Greater Hartford region and Connecticut.

 The individuals being honored with induction into the Business Hall of Fame are:

  • Jerry Franklin, President & CEO, Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network, CPTV/WNPR
  • Andrew Mandell, Chief Executive Officer, Data-Mail, Inc.
  • Joyce Mandell, Executive Vice President, Data-Mail, Inc.
  • Liam E. McGee, Chairman, President & Chief Executive Officer, The Hartford

 “These outstanding individuals have each established a standard of excellence that reflects their commitment to community and determination to improve individual lives in meaningful and enduring ways,” said Louis J. Golden, President of Junior Achievement of Southwest New England.  “We are pleased to honor their work and their example, as we encourage, empower and inspire young people to pursue their dreams and realize their potential.”

Jerry Franklin, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Connecticut Public Broadcasting, Inc., has led the growth, evolution and accomplishment of the company since 1984. His responsibilities include overseeing the state’s only locally owned media organization producing television, radio, print, and Internet content over a variety of media channels. He received the Silver Circle Award last fall from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for enduring contributions to the vitality of the television industry. Both CPTV and WNPR have been widely recognized for their excellence in programming, earning numerous national and regional awards.

Andy and Joyce Mandell
founded Data-Mail, Inc., a family-owned, full-service direct mail production company in 1971.  Since beginning with two employees, the company has grown to become one of the country’s leading direct marketing enterprises, employing more than 900 people with production facilities in Newington and Windsor.  The Mandells have significantly supported numerous nonprofit organizations and endeavors throughout the region, through the Andrew J. and Joyce Mandell Family Foundation, including The Mandell Center for Multiple Sclerosis, Mandell Jewish Community Center, The Boys & Girls Club of Hartford, St. Francis Hospital & Medical Center, and The Mandell Academy for Teachers at the Connecticut Science Center.

 Liam E. McGee has served as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Hartford, a leader in property and casualty insurance, group benefits and mutual funds, since 2009.  He has led a company-wide transformation effort, positioning The Hartford to deliver superior performance and greater shareholder value. The company is widely recognized for its service excellence, sustainability practices, trust and integrity. In addition to serving as a board member of numerous highly regarded industry organizations, McGee has taken an active leadership role in the Asylum Hill community, where The Hartford is headquartered.

Junior Achievement is the global leader in providing cutting-edge, hands-on financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work-readiness education.  JA helps empower young people to own their future economic success. During its three decade history, the JA of Southwest New England Business Hall of Fame has inducted more than 130 individuals for their business achievements and contributions to the community.

The support of leading local businesses is indispensable in furthering JA’s work with local schools throughout the region.  The reception sponsors for the Business Hall of Fame induction ceremony are The Hartford and Stanley Black & Decker.  Travelers is the Premier Sponsor and Webster Bank is Platinum Sponsor.   Master of Ceremonies will be Bill Griffeth, co-anchor of CNBC’s “Closing Bell.”

JA's unique delivery system provides the training, materials, and support necessary to enable volunteers to build student skills in financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship.   The number of students and schools - from kindergarten through 12th grade - participating in JA programs has increased during the past year, reflecting increasing awareness of the importance of financial education.  JA volunteers come from all walks of life and use their personal experiences to make the JA curricula practical and realistic. Providing children with positive adult role models, who illustrate ways to build self-confidence, develop skills and find avenues of success in our economic system, is a hallmark of Junior Achievement.

The program committee for the Hall of Fame induction ceremony includes Program Chairman, Don Allan, Stanley Black & Decker; Dinner Chair, Margaret W. Lawson, CPTV; Tom Barnes, Barnes Group; Kathy Bromage, The Hartford; Jeffrey Hoffman, Hoffman Auto Group; Peter Kelly, Updike, Kelly & Spellacy; AnnMarie LaBreck, The Hartford; and Paul Pendergast, Back9 Network.  All net proceeds will benefit JA educational programs.
