"Natural Ingredients" Art Opening at Loomis Chaffee

Natural Ingredients, an exhibit that features the work of Connecticut artists Jennifer Davies and Roberta Friedman will open November 12, at the Sue and Eugene Mercy Jr. Gallery in the Richmond Art Center at Loomis Chaffee. Both artists draw from nature to produce visually stimulating collages using a variety of organic materials. The exhibition will run through December 12.

The two artists work independently of one another, but their pieces often complement each other. Both artists use various media to depict natural scenes and manipulate materials to create a range of effects. Branford resident Davies focuses on making monotypes, watercolors, collages, and handmade paper pieces. Working on location and drawing from various natural objects, she then creates abstracts. She is a member of City Gallery in New Haven, the Monotype Guild of New England, and has many pieces in corporate collections throughout the area.

Friedman, who began as a watercolorist, now uses layered watercolor pieces, created by tearing, cutting, and fitting together elements of color and texture to create watercolor collages. She also uses bark, seaweed, and other organic matter as well as metals, metallic paints, inks, gouache, and ground precious stone to enhance the creativity in her pieces. Her work has been exhibited throughout the New Haven area for more than 30 years with pieces in many private and corporate collections.

“I’m interested in seeing certain things that can be made by layering papers and sewing nets over one another to create either strong or delicate textures,” Davies observed. “I work intuitively and seek to express something lively and joyful through my materials and imagery.” While Friedman added “My vision is to contemplate and re-imagine the ever-changing layering — its grandeur and its serenity — through texture, light, and color. Ultimately, it is my goal to take the viewer on an imaginative journey into memory, reflection, and solace.”

An opening reception will be held on Tuesday, November 12, from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. The public is invited to attend the opening reception and to view the exhibition during regular gallery hours. The Mercy Gallery is located in the Richmond Art Center on the campus of The Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9 p.m., and Sunday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m. There is no admission charge.
