Capturing a Year in Art: Hairdresser on Fire Artist Series

Local Connecticut artist, Michael Justino Michaud, of
Enfield was selected to be the featured artist in the fourth installment of the
Hairdresser on Fire Artist Series.

The hairdresser on Fire Artist Series opens up the
intimate venue of the salon four-times a year to local artists, transforming
the space into a gallery. The goal is to bring the community together and
highlight homegrown artists, while raising funds for the Windsor High School
Art Department Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to graduating
seniors and financial assistance to underclassman to attend pre-college summer
art programs. To date, Hairdresser on Fire has raised more than $2,500 for the
Windsor High School Art Department Scholarship Fund.

In 2012, Michaud, a graphic designer by day, got back to
his roots of painting with the goal of completing 365 pieces of art in one year.
After capturing a year in art under the pseudonym mijumi, he decided to donate
his works to noteworthy causes to help boost their fundraising efforts.
Currently mijumi’s art has helped to raise funds for the American Cancer
Society, Autism Speaks and Seeds for Peace.

“Donating my work to benefit the art students at Windsor
High is a perfect fit for my mission,” says Michaud. “It’s important that these
kids get proper encouragement to stick with it and let their talents shine. Art
is a natural expression  of what is inside and I am excited to see what they’ve
been working on as well.” mijumi’s works will be on display Saturday, Oct. 5
from 5 to 9 p.m. at Hairdresser on Fire, 176 Broad St., in Windsor, Conn.,
alongside some of Windsor High School’s budding artists.

The art show is free and open to the public and donations
for the Windsor High School Art Department Scholarship Fund will be accepted. Food and tastings will be provided by; Bear's Smoke House
Barbeque, Family Pizzeria, Windsor 75 family Restaurant, the Whistlestop Cafe,
Nat Hayden's Real Pit BBQ and GET BAKED. Windsor High School’s Jazz band
will perform throughout the evening and the opportunity to win prizes from
Hairdresser on Fire, Art and Soul Gallery, Ashley’s Distinctive Jewelry and
Gifts, mijumi, Bear’s Smokehouse Barbeque, Pizza Rama, Jordan florist, Bill
Selig Jewelers, Zocco’s Restaurant, Snellgrove’s florist and the Whistleshop
Café will be available. All of the proceeds will benefit the Windsor High School
Art Department Scholarship Fund.

“mijumi’s work is different than any other pieces we’ve
had so far,” said William Gleason, co-owner of Hairdresser on Fire and master
stylist and makeup artist. “It’s an interesting snap shot of a person’s ‘year
in art’ and a unique concept for a show. We are looking forward to bringing the
community together to see this project.”
