Windsor Storm Debris Guidelines

Landfill fees have been waved for Windsor and Bloomfield residents.

Every lawn in town is littered with storm debris — some of which is far too large to be considered debris —but the Town of Windsor, recognizing that streets and lawns must be cleared as soon as possible, have released a set of guidelines for homeowners to follow when clearing their property.

The town will pick up debris placed in front of homes, but residents are encouraged to bring debris to the landfill (fees have been waved for storm debris only) to help the town manage the physical damage that must be cleared.

Damage is so extensive, according to Public Works Director Brian Funk, that clean up will take weeks.

To manage instances of statewide storm damage, the State of Connecticut has secured contractors — some of whom the town will use to assist in the clean up across town, according to Town Manager Peter Souza.

Town officials will meet with the contractors over the next few days to organize pick up of debris from homes throughout town, Souza said. Even with the help of contractors, the clean up process is expected to be complete by "early to mid-December," added Souza.

In the event of snowfall over the coming weeks, remaining debris may not be picked up until the Spring, according to the Emergency Operation Center.

Those who would like the town to pick up their debris should follow the following guidelines:

  • Debris should be placed in front of house, not hanging into the street or blocking the sidewalk.
  • No leaves will be picked up. Regular leaf pickup is taking place along with garbage pick up.
  • Residents should take care to maintain access to fire hydrants.
  • If debris is too large to place by the sidewalk or curb, it should be placed in front of your yard as close to the sidewalk or curb as possible.
  • Debris should not be placed in brooks or waterways.
