Today is the Winter Solstice

1. Today is the winter solstice, meaning that the sun is at its most southern point in our sky throughout the year.

2. The solstice marks the shortest period of daylight, and the longest period of darkness in a single day during the year.

3. According to TimeAndDate.com, on the winter solstice, "all places above a latitude of 66.5 degrees north (Arctic Polar Circle) are now in darkness, while locations below a latitude of 66.5 degrees south (Antarctic Polar Circle) receive 24 hours of daylight."

4. While today marks the shortest period of daylight in a single day, it also means that days will begin to grow longer until next autumn.

5. Sunset is expected to occur at 4:22 p.m. today, according to AOL Weather. A high of 51ºF is expected, along with a low of 33ºF. There's just a 10 percent chance of precipitation.
