Today is Armed Forces Day

U.S. Defense Dept. offering poster download.

It was President Harry S. Truman who led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country, according the the U.S. Defense Department.

On Aug. 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department -- the Department of Defense.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy on Armed Forces Day:“For more than six decades we have been celebrating Armed Forces Day and honoring the men and women in uniform who go to extraordinary measures to protect the freedoms we enjoy.  Like the wars we have fought before, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have taken a toll on Connecticut’s brave soldiers and their families.  Tomorrow, as we celebrate our military and the many people in uniform who make incredible sacrifices for our freedoms, we must also remember those who are no longer with us.  We are grateful for the work being done by the men and women of our armed forces and we thank our soldiers and our veterans for their dedicated service to the state and to the country.”

The weather forecast for Armed Forces Day is partly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of showers and a high temperature near 75.
