Tips For Handling A Flood

What you should know today, Tues., Aug. 30, 2011.

With waters exceeding the banks of the the Farmington and Connecticut Rivers, and levels expected to continue to rise through Wednesday morning, you may be able to put these links and tips regarding Flood safety from FEMA to good use:

1. During a flood, FEMA offers up this advice:

  • Do not walk through moving water. Six inches of moving water can make you fall. If you have to walk in water, walk where the water is not moving. Use a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you.
  • Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely. You and the vehicle can be quickly swept away.

  • Avoid floodwaters; water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline, or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines.

3. It's possible that you'll have flood damage. Here are a few tips FEMA offers up.

5. The flood warning has been extended through Wednesday afternoon. Temperatures are expected to peak in the low 80's and bottom out in the 50's tonight, according to National Weather Service reports.
