Photos: Tomato Growing Contest A Summer Favorite

The winning tomato came in at just over two pounds.

Contestant and supporters gathered Thursday evening for the announcement of the winner of the Second Annual 55+ Tomato Growing Contest.

The contest is quickly becoming a summer favorite in Windsor.  In it's second year, the contest was sponsored by the Senior Center for Windsor seniors to show off their gardening prowess. 

According to Windsor Senior Services Coordinator Rick Liegl, folks were eager to see who grew the biggest tomato in town. Contestants were so eager, Liegl said, that "a lot of senors start growing their tomatos in May.

Contestant Lucy Papelian said she started growing her tomatos in June in her flower garden. Jean Mooney came in with a large heirloom tomato which she grew from seed. "I have around seven different varities that I grow," she said.

Third place of $50 and a trophy went to David Saltzman for his tomato which was 15/16ths of a pound. 

Second place of $100 and a trophy went to Jean Moodey's 1.5 pound tomato.

First place of $200 and the first place trophy was given to Guy Blais for his 2 and an eighth of a pound of tomato-goodness.

Other contenders included Priscilla K. Ptasznik, Richard Della Rocco, Wendal and Bonnie Chan, Lucy Papelian, Paul Cassarino, Francis Wonsik, and Pauline Martin.The event was sponsored by Windsor Federal Savings, Windsor Rehabilitation, Windsor Chamber of Commerce and First Town Downtown.Congratulations to all the winners!
