Windsor Pet-Food Pantry Marks First Anniversary

Friends of Windsor Animal Care and Control will celebrate its one-year anniversary Saturday with a pet food drive Sat., July 28.

Times are tough, but times are especially tough for families with pets.

According to the Associated Press, Connecticut is one of several states with growing populations within animal shelters. "Rising economic anxieties make it increasingly difficult for some pet owners to justify spending $1,000 a year or more on pet food, veterinary service and other costs," the AP reported.

Roughly one year ago, a group of local advocated of four-legged family members formed Friends of Windsor Animal Care and Control, and they've put forth a herculean effort in providing support for local families and animals in need.

Formed in the weeks and months following an effort on the part of Windsor residents to influence the town's intentions to move the Windsor dog pound out of town and use another town's facility, Friends of Windsor Animal Care and Control established a mobile food pantry, delivering bags of food to doorsteps throughout town.

In the group's first year, it has helped more than 50 families and over 95 pets.
