NWP Country Fair Brings Old-Fashioned Fun

Homestyle fun and food

One of Windsor's most looked forward to events will be held on Sat., Sept. 24. The Northwest Park Country Fair is held annually, just as the apples are ready for picking and the leaves are starting to change color.

Debra Reimer is a long-time fan-turned-chairperson, of the 29-year-old fair. "It's old fashioned entertainment that won’t break the bank," she said. "The kids love it, but, so do a lot of the adults."

This year there will be some new events.

There are 42 slots available for people interested in taking a personal tour with the park ranger. By filling a seat in the 8-person golf cart, participants will be able to experience a half-hour ride through some of the woods and wetlands located on the 473-acre park. "We think it should be wonderful," said Reimer.

Also, under the large picnic pavilion, live demonstrations of wool spinning, crocheting, knitting and woodworking will take place.

A mini-farmer's market will be offering cider, donuts, pumpkins and mums this year as well.

This event boasts a variety of things to do for kids at a low price: ongoing games, a tug-o-war match, water balloon toss, face painting, pumpkin carving and decorating and even a pumpkin seed spitting contest.

The fair is a major fundraiser for the park's activities. Sponsored by the Friends of Northwest Park, it provides funding for scholarships, camp, and more.

The Friends  of Northwest Park is a volunteer organization that has contributed to making the park such an active, vital and cutting-edge nature facility in the Greater Hartford area.

"It’s a wonderful thing for families," said Reimer adding that it has only been postponed for rain one time in its history.

Northwest Park's Annual Country Fair will be open from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 24. Admission is $2. For more information, go to www.northwestpark.org.  Rain date is set for Sept. 25, 12 p.m. - 5 p.m.
