Photos: Irene Woes Persist as Rivers Cause Flooding in Windsor

Water breached the banks of the Farmington and Connecticut rivers Monday.

Irene's rains and winds may be far gone, but Windsor continued to feel the effects of the tropical storm Monday as waters from the Farmington and Connecticut rivers breached their banks, causing Pleasant Street to be shut down, and completely covering the parking lot at .

While the Farmington is known to flood and cause Pleasant Street to close, the flooding could continue to progress, meteorologists say. According to weather.com, a river flood warning has been issued and will not be lifted until 8 a.m. Wed., Aug. 31.

The flooding has only compounded the nuiscance that is power outages. Wilson was hit hardest, with few traffic lights working along Windsor Avenue, shops closed, and the smell of barbecue in the air from residents preparing dinner without a working stove.

The Citgo station on Windsor Avenue had no power as of 4 p.m. Monday, and was unable to provide gas to patrons as a result. They were, however, open for business transactions involving cash within the station's store.

Traffic lights were also out along route 218 Monday, in addition to Day Hill Road.

Prior to Irene's arrival, Windsor Police when approaching intersections without electricity.

At intersections, drivers should "stop and proceed with caution. Drivers should treat intersections as if there is a [four-way] stop."

As of 5:30 p.m. on Monday, more than 3,500 Windsor residents are without power.
