Governor Warns of Impending Power Outages

What you should know today, Fri., Oct. 28, 2011.

Governor Malloy has echoed the National Weather Services warning to residents, saying the early snowfall could result in power outages across the state.

The power outages, he said Friday, could be caused by broken and fallen limbs that, because they still have their leaves, will likely succumb to the weight of the snowfall.

According to the Governor's office, the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection has been in contact with utility companies "to discuss preparations ahead of the storm."

"Today and tonight, think about what you'd need if the power went out — batteries, battery-powered radios, and of course ways to keep warm — extra clothing and blankets and be sure your generator is working if you have one," said Malloy.

"Hopefully this won't be a blockbuster storm, but its rare to have this type of potential so early in the season," he added.

On the bright side, many Windsor residents will likely have all the items they'll need in the event of a power outage, including those elusive "D" batteries — only a few thousand lost power just a couple of months ago when Irene swept through, and power was restored for most within a couple of days.

While 6 to 12 inches is possible for some, according to the Weather Channel, National Weather Service reports and NBC Connecticut forecast Windsor receiving about 2 to 5 inches of snow between Saturday and Sunday evening.
