Driving Safety During a Flood

With the return of floodwaters, here are a few tips for driving safely during a flood from Weather.com.

As heavy rain contiues and cresting of rivers that is not expected to occur until early Friday morning, its likely that you'll have to hop in the car on your way and returning from work, or to take a trip to the store tonight.

Driving while waters are on the rise isn't always the safest bet. Here are a few driving tips from Weather.com:

  • Do not drive unless absolutely necessary
  • Floods can occur rapidly and unexpectedly, especially if dams release water or levees break.
  • Do not drive through flood areas. Turn around and find another route.
  • Don't try to cross a flooded road, even if the water seems shallow enough. Flooding can cause road failure, and there may not be a road underneath that large puddle of water.
  • Two feet of rushing water can sweep away most cars, including SUVs.
  • Six inches of water can reach the bottom of most cars, and can cause loss of control or stalling.
