This week the Board of Education kicked off its annual budget with the approval of budget assumptions and held it first budget forum to gather community input. Synopsis - in spite of declining enrollment there are attendant costs that rise each year - some contractual and others bound by market forces beyond our control. In any case the Board is committed to developing a fiscally responsible budget that meets the needs of the children of Windsor Public Schools. Education is the foundation of any meaningful economic growth, a stable and thriving democracy and civil society. As such public education is the best bet for public investment.
A draft budget will be presented at the next regularly scheduled public Board of Education meeting on January 24, 2012 (held in the Council Chambers at Windsor Town Hall). At each of these public meetings there are two opportunities for public comment – at the beginning and end of the meeting.
The Board will be holding additional forums for public input at LP Wilson

I strongly urge our community to attend at least one forum. It is the best way to ensure your views and priorities are included in the budget process. In addition, you will have a better understanding of the choice you will make in the budget referendum held in May. By the way, voting down the budget only results in more budget cuts in our schools which jeopardizes the quality of educational services children receive - contrary to opinion it does not make us more effective, just leaner. The time to positively impact stewardship of our tax dollars is during the deliberative, democratic process of budget development. What are your priorities? your concerns? what is it you think we should be helping our children learn? what kind of learning opportunities do you think we should be providing for our children? Each of these answers will have resource implications. Get engaged. Help us construct a meaningful budget that promotes and sustains a high quality education in our Town and by extension a strong vibrant Windsor.
